Shift-working parents want their children to be cared for in their own home.

“Currently, almost 5 million children (or about one-third of children) younger than age 6 living in families with working parents have parents who work before 7:00 a.m. or after 6:00 p.m. on weekdays or on weekends. Further, children of color, children in families with low incomes, and children in single-parent families are disproportionately likely to have parents working these hours.

Parents with low incomes and parents of color are disproportionately likely to work nontraditional-hour schedules. [Investing in child care during nontraditional hours] can help make current child care investments and services more accessible to these families and thus can help address some of the inequities in the child care system’s current structure.”
